Phase 2: Social Media

While the recruitment idea through zoom classes was interesting, we decided we wanted to help promote mental health and reach out to more youth. We began brainstorming ways in which we could grasp the attention of youth, and decided that social media was probably the best way to achieve that!

From this point, our new approach was to create informational and instructional videos and posts on various social media platforms (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook etc.) that was targetted towards youth. Since our partner at the time was a karate academy, we decided that we would work with the academy to create content showcasing how karate can improve mental health.

By doing so, we were able to address the fitness and mental health components to our project, while also helping to promote our partner! Our main goal however was to provide youth with research backed and fun content that could help them learn and make better lifestyle choices.

Our group began to brainstorm specific content ideas that incorporated popular social media trends on Tiktok and Instagram to make our content more exciting and appealing. We began to conduct research on the benefits of karate for mental health, such as the importance of meditation techniques for mindfulness, and karate as a confidence boosting activity. Our goal was to show how karate is not only beneficial for your physical health, but also your mental health! We met in person with one of the Karate instructors from the academy and produced some amazing content! However, things took a turn, which led to our third phase of the project.
